FRC Chairman identifies the easiest way to fight corruption

Mr. Victor Muruako, the Acting Chairman of Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), says the easiest way to fight corruption is through fiscal responsibility.

He made the observation on Tuesday in Abuja when he received a delegation of the Adamawa State FRC on a two-day study visit.

Muruako said that it would be better accountability and transparency in governance if governments at all levels adopted fiscal responsibility bill.

“The easiest way to fight corruption is through fiscal responsibility, accountability and efficiency.

“It entails planning properly for the budget; you have to roll out properly your Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).

“It is on this basis you now have a good budget and then you don’t have the challenges we have been experiencing in the past about budget.

“We do not fight corruption; we prevent corruption because we try to stop you by insisting that you do the right thing.

“We believe that with the new administration and President Muhammadu Buhari’s mantra on anti-corruption, it is a new dawn for our economy.”

Muruako said that the FRC also had the responsibility to help states on capacity building and technical assistance to ensure smooth operation of the commission.

He commended the Adamawa State Government for signing the Fiscal Responsibility Bill into law and called on other state governments, which had not done so, to do same.

The leader of the delegation, Mrs. Christine Myada, said the visit was to study the operations and activities of the FRC at the Federal level.

“We hope that this visit will help us to strengthen our own capabilities and activities in Adamawa state.”

Myada said that the Adamawa State FRC has recorded some achievements since it was established in 2014.

“We have been able to publish our annual report; we have also monitored construction projects in the state to see if they are in line with what was budgeted for.

“And where there were discrepancies, we have brought them to the attention of the government and the government is taking action on those discrepancies we observed.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commission is aimed at reforming the management of Nigeria’s public finance. (NAN)
