Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon E Arase, yesterday visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, where he met with the INEC acting Chairperson, Mrs. Amina Bala Zakari.
“The visit is aimed at cementing the existing relationship between NPF and INEC in ensuring the actualisation of INEC’s mandate,” Force Public Relations Officer, Ag. ACP Olabisi Kolawole, said.
Ag. ACP Kolawole quoted the IGP as disclosing that police commissioners nationwide have been directed to ensure adequate security at INEC offices and also at election tribunal sittings.
“Acting INEC chairperson, Mrs. Aminat Bala Zakari, used the occasion to intimate the visiting IGP of INEC readiness to work with the NPF in ensuring successes on the forthcoming elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states,” the Force Spokesperson said in a statement in Abuja.
In another development, the IGP has given state commissioners of Police a week ultimatum to report on their compliance to earlier directives on withdrawal of policemen attached to unauthorised persons across the country, and reduction of police personnel to political office holders.
