The Federal Government has expressed deep concern over the political and security situation in the Republic of Niger.

The government’s statement is a sequel to the gunfire and explosions that took place in Niamey, the Nigerien capital on Saturday.

The Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey and the presidential palace were reported to have been targeted during the attack.

Coupists had attempted to seize power from the country’s leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, but were repelled by the Nigerien security forces, with assistance from the African Corps.

The military junta in Niger known as the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), confirmed the development that personnel within the military forces made attempts to overthrow the junta.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, said the Federal Government viewed with deep concern the current political and security situation in the Republic of Niger.

“It notes that as a neighbour with which it shares close historical, fraternal and cultural bonds, the Federal Government of Nigeria is keenly desirous to see that peace, security, democracy and development reign supreme in the country.

“In this regard, it notes that a peaceful, secure and stable situation in Niger will impact positively and directly on Nigeria, the sub-region and the Sahel,” the government said.

The Federal Government further said any resort to the use of force to settle political differences detracts from the objective.

“It, therefore, urges the government and people of Niger to work together towards an inclusive and participatory return to stability and constitutional order in the interest of the country, regional peace and stability,” the statement read. (The Sun)
