Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i, on Saturday launched Keep Kaduna Clean campaign and said government will construct landfills and suitable waste transfer stations in three zones of the state.
Flagging off the campaign at Badarawa Primary School, Kaduna City, where heaps of waste were dumped beside a public school, El-Rufa’i said landfills and waste transfer stations will be constructed in three major urban centres, Kaduna, Zaria and Kafanchan to process and dispose of solid waste sustainably.
El-Rufa’i said: “My administration will not allow state urban centres to become sprawling slums that drenched in rubbish and affluence adding that towns and cities cannot be permitted to be defaced by waste.
“As we promised in the APC Kaduna Restoration Programme, our part’s manifesto in charge of planning, environmental and urban management to collaborate with local governments and municipalities.
“This is to ensure that our streets are cleaned; that solid and liquid waste are collected, processed and disposed off in an environmentally-sustainable manner.”
He said, the local governments will do the same for the towns and villages within their jurisdiction.
El-Rufa’i added: “We would also embark on the beautification of our neighbourhoods. Government will recover public land to ensure that green areas, parks and recreational facilities are provided in all towns and villages in the state.
“Government will invest in public enlightenment about cleanliness. Then we shall also empower sanitation and environmental enforcement officers of KSATELEA to help advance our programme of clean and orderly cities.
“Our local government chairmen will be doing this campaign as well because it is a statewide mission.”
