The immediate past Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Anambra State chapter, Mr Patrick Obianyo, has urged state governments yet to pay their workers to suspend capital projects to enable them do so.
Obianyo made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Saturday.
He said that payment of salaries had become a matter of obligation to every employer of labour, including the state governments.
“These states that owe thought it is a privilege to pay workers, which is far from the truth. “Rather, they should suspend all capital projects and pay workers.
“The other day, a governor that is owing over seven months’ salary arrears managed to pay just December 2014 salaries and it was all over the media as if he has done well.
“Not paying workers at the end of every month is suicidal.
“For a worker to be denied his or her take home pay that can’t take them home is suicidal,” he said.
Obianyo, however, commended the governors that do not default in paying their workforce and called for review of workers basic salaries. (NAN)
