The introduction of card readers by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), towards the successful conduct of the fast-approaching 2015 general elections has been described as “another reliable and wise innovation.”
In a communiqué issued after a two-day workshop in Uyo on “Responsible Reporting of The 2015 General Elections”, media practitioners and civil society organisations noted that if the machine is effectively used, “it will, assuredly, curtail and possibly, eliminate multiple voting and reduce cases of electoral malpractices” in the elections.
The communique was signed by Mr. Nsikak Essien, Chairman of the Communique Committee.
It stated that “paper presenters from security agencies assured that they had done much to ensure violent-free elections before, during and after the exercise.” It added that “all paper presenters from the media, advised journalists that factual, accurate, balanced and fair reporting, are the ultimate objectives of good journalism.”
News Express recalls that some participants at the workshop, where the working of the new device was demonstrated, however expressed reservations over the lasting workability of the electronic machine “if its power goes down or any other defect during the voting process.”
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Akwa Ibom State, Barr. Austin Okojie, had explained at the workshop that the card reader machine will not be used for voting but for “identification and authentication of voters” during the 2015 general elections.
