4 doctors kidnapped in Rivers, members threaten strike

Four medical doctors have been kidnapped in Rivers State, provoking anger and a threat to down tool by doctors in the state.

The doctors were abducted withinsix days withthe worst hit areas being Abonnema axisof Port Harcourt.

Two of the victims areDrs Wordu Ovunda and Samuel Okpara.

Dr Ovunda had been in the den of the kidnappers for some days, but when his colleagues were making efforts for his release, the kidnappers struck again on Wednesday night and kidnapped Dr Okpara from his hospital.

The angry doctorsyesterday tooktheirprotest to the Rivers Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who later had a closed-door meeting with them.

It was gathered that at the meeting that they expressed concernover the incident and appealed to the securityagencies, through the governor, to protect, not only the medical doctors, but the entire citizens in the state.

The governor thereafter directed the security agents, especially the security chiefs, also present at the meeting, to ensure the security of citizens of the state.
