Dear Sir,
YOUR CUT-OFF MARK SYSTEM IS KILLING MERIT, KILLING OAU AND KILLING NIGERIA AND ITS FUTURE — ABOLISH IT NOW!
We did not send our children to school for 12 years for you to reject them with 75% and admit another child with 53% for the same course. What kind of a school are you?
OAU GOVERNING COUNCIL, YOUR SYSTEM IS FRAUD.
You have turned OAU, the cradle of excellence, into the headquarters of educational injustice and ethnic mediocrity.
LOOK AT WHAT YOU DID IN YOUR FACULTY OF LAW:
Osun (the state where the university is located): 76.875
Oyo: 76.53
Ogun: 75.78
Kwara: 76.83
Kogi: 76.1
Ondo: 75.05
Lagos: 69.68
Bayelsa: 68.40
Gombe: 63.13
Kaduna: 57.05
Niger: 58.15
Kebbi: 53.43
In your Department of Accounting:
Osun: 64.00, Oyo: 63.20, Ogun: 63.20, Kogi: 61.05, Kwara: 60.60, Ekiti: 59.63, Ondo: 58.45, Lagos: 55.70, Cross River: 54.68, Ebonyi: 53.98, Benue: 52.23
My son who was born in Lagos State, raised and educated in Lagos scored 63% for accounting, but you put his cut-off at 63.20 because his great-grand-parents were from Ogun State. Meanwhile, you offered admission to a student in the same Lagos State who scored 55.0 because his great-grand-parents are from Lagos State.
You call this federal character? We call it a secret ethnic agenda.
Why is it secret? Why don’t you publish this evil list on your website before JAMB? Why do parents only see it after you have destroyed their children’s future? What are you hiding?
You hide it because you know it is indefensible.
YOU HAVE DECLARED WAR ON YORUBA CHILDREN ON YORUBA SOIL
How can OAU, situated in Ile-Ife, demand 75.78% from an Ogun child to study Law, 76.53% from an Oyo child, 76.875% from an Osun child, but demand 57.05% from a Kaduna child and 53.43% from a Kebbi child for the same law, same class, and same certificate?
The most punished people in your education system today are the Yorubas. Yorubas are deliberately and secretly marginalized and punished across the country by depriving our children their right to education just like every other tribes in Nigeria. In fact, we are deprived of this right on our own ancestral soil. You have made Ile-Ife a place where an Ogun indigene is a foreigner in his own land. Go to all federal higher institutions across Yoruba land, the same unconstitutional pattern is in play.
You are accommodating your own poor children and kinsmen with low scores and sacrificing brilliant Yoruba children to do it. History has recorded it. Enough is enough!
THE THREE BOYS FROM LAGOS FOR OAU 2026 JAMB & POST-UTME ADMISSION – THIS IS YOUR SHAME
Three boys, all born in Lagos, all attended primary and secondary schools in Lagos, all wrote JAMB in Lagos, and all wrote Post-UTME in OAU ICT Centre, Ile-Ife. Under the Constitution, they are all Nigerians.
Boy 1 (my own son) – Ogun origin – scored 63% in Accounting.
Boy 2 – Kaduna origin – scored 59%.
Boy 3 – Lagos origin – scored 56%.
You admitted Boy 2 and Boy 3. You rejected Boy 1.
You looked at three boys trained in the same environment and told them: Your blood is more important than your brain. The state your grand parents is more important than your score.
What kind of citizens are you producing?
TO THE PARENTS READING THIS:
Your child is not dull. The system is dull. Your child with 70% was rejected not because he failed, but because your state is being punished with high cut-off. Don’t let them tell you your child is not good enough. Fight this madness now now.
TO THE STUDENTS:
They have turned your brilliance into a crime. A child who scores 75% and is denied Law while 53% is admitted will never believe in Nigeria again. You have created a generation that hates merit and believes in quota, connection, and corruption.
TO THE POLICY MAKERS IN NUC, FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, AND OAU GOVERNING COUNCIL:
This policy is retrogressive:
1. It breeds laziness. If I know I need only 53% to read Law in OAU, why should I read for 80%? You are deliberately ensuring that so-called Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS) remain permanently less developed. You lower the bar instead of raising the child.
2. It destroys quality. You cannot build a first-class university with third-class cut-offs. You are producing lawyers who could not pass Law on merit, doctors who could not pass Medicine on merit. Your administration has destroyed the standard built over many years to make the university great.
3. It violates Section 42 of the 1999 Constitution which says no Nigerian shall be discriminated against based on place of origin. Cut-off by state of origin is unconstitutional. And we will challenge you in court.
4. It is a time bomb for national unity. You cannot preach One Nigeria while operating 37 Nigerias in admission.
5. To show that your logic is porous. With the level of educational development Lagos State is rated, with highest number of quality schools than any other states in the country, you still counted Lago among ELDS? This madness can not be right in the day, night, or by any mathematical calculation or logic whatsoever. It is dirty politics and abuse of positions as administrators of education and university management.
OUR NON-NEGOTIABLE DEMANDS TO OAU SENATE STARTING WITH THIS SAME 2026 ADMISSION:
1. Abolish state-of-origin cut off immediately. Return to what made Ife great: 70% merit, 30% catchment based on where a child lives and schools, not where his grand father was born. Stop politicizing education thing in Nigeria. Stop appointing politicians in administration of our schools. Appoint competent hands.
2. Publish every cut-off publicly before admission, not after. If you are proud of your 53.43% for Law, publish it on your website before JANB with your full chest.
3. Stop using Educationally Less Developed State as excuse for mediocrity. Are you not ashamed of yourselves? If a state is educationally less developed, give it more schools, more teachers, more funding, more bridging programs. Don’t give it lower cut-off for Law, Medicine, and other courses. Stop embezzling the funds and use lower cut-off mark as cover up. You incredibly and fantastically too corrupt. Enough is enough!
4. Reinstate merit as OAU’s only identity. OAU did not become Great Ife because of shameful cut-off marks like this. It became Great Ife because of merit. You are destroying its standard.
Vice-Chancellor, Senate, Council – the blood of rejected brilliant students is crying for justice. It is so sad and unfortunate that you allowed yourselves to be used for playing dirty politics with our education system.
A brilliant student denied education today becomes a frustrated citizen tomorrow. You are part of those who destroyed this country, encourage Cultism, corruption, and insecurity.
You have a choice: Continue this secret cut-off that rewards dullness and punishes brilliance, or return OAU to be greatness again.
We, the parents and concerned Nigerians, say enough is enough.
Abolish the discriminatory cut-off system now and give the students who merit admission the admission they deserve! Otherwise, we shall resort to serious public campaign, legal action and international advocacy against this poor and evil standard the current administration of the university have inculcated into the system.

Akin Okunowo
