Yes, it’s true; OBA OF BENIN IS DEAD

Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Erediauwa I, has died, bringing an end to his long reign that started on March 23, 1979.

The Benin Traditional Council had yesterday dismissed whisperings that the worst might have happened to the paramount ruler of the Edo Nation.

However, investigations by News Express showed that the revered king has indeed died. “The king has actually gone to sleep,” said a well-placed source who pleaded anonymity. Another said: “Yes, the king is no more, but it cannot be announced until the traditional rites are performed as demanded by Bini custom and tradition. This may take weeks or even months. You cannot announce the king’s death just like that.”

News Express had yesterday reported the anxiety that gripped Edo residents as the rumour about his death made the rounds.

A source had told News Express: “He has reportedly been sick, and it was said that his health took a turn for the worse when he lost his wife last year.” He added: “Out of respect and fear of the king, no one would want to speak about or officially break the news if it is indeed true that he is dead, unless directed by the palace.”

Oba Erediauwa has been out of circulation for a while and eyebrows were raised when he could not personally receive President Goodluck Jonathan during the latter’s campaign visit to Benin City.

Born in 1923 and formerly known as Prince Solomon Akenzua, Erediuwa was crowned the 38th Oba of Benin following the death of his father, Oba Akenzua II.
