Tournament favourites Ivory Coast as good as booked a quarter-final ticket after trouncing Tunisia 3-0 this evening in their second group game at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
Goals by Gervinho in the 20th minute, African Footballer of the Year Yaya Toure in the 86th and substitute Didier Ya Konan with his first touch of the ball in the 89th as against none by the Tunisians, saw the Ivorians accumulating six points to sit comfortably on top of the Group D table.
It was a case of sweet revenge for the Ivorians who lost 1-3 to the Tunisians in the sides’ only previous Nations Cup meeting in Port Elizabeth when South Africa hosted the tournament in 1996
This evening in the Rustenburg, the Elephants looked more like potential champions unlike what happened on Monday, when they barely managed to beat Togo 2-1.
Tunisia, who unexpectedly overcame fellow North Africans Algeria by a lone goal on Monday, remain second in the group pending the outcome of this evening’s match between Algeria and Togo.
