Like his wife, former Super Eagles goaltender Wilfred Agbonavbare has died of cancer. He died yesterday in Spain, aged 48.
Agbonavbare had been battling cancer for some time, and it was reported that his former club. Rato Valecano of Spain had raised money to foot his hospital bills.
However, the uncompromising hands of death struck, turning his children into orphans – having previously taken away his wife, also through cancer.
Agbonavbare was Super Eagles’ back-up goalkeeper to Peter Rufai during the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations won by Nigeria in Tunisia.
He was in goal for the Super Eagles in several qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup in the USA in 1994. He was also one of the deputising goalkeepers to Peter Rufai during that edition of the World Cup.
