The Co-Operative business societies in Abuja have protested the hike in electricity tariff in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), demanding an immediate downward review by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) so as to save their businesses from imminent ruin.
The group in a protest letter to the AEDC Managing Director dated January 15, 2015 described the 58 per cent increase in kilowatt rate for commercial power consumers in FCT as a “SETBACK FOR BUSINESS OPERATIONS.”
They lamented that the current increase will ruin their businesses, especially with the world economy facing turbulent times and less than a month to the general elections in Nigeria.
“We strongly reject this increment and request AEDC to cancel/revoke it,” the protest letter signed by 25 firms said.
The business operators “are appealing to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Ministry of Power and all other concerned citizens to intervene in the interest of the general public and to put a check on Abuja Electricity Distribution Company before it is too late.”
