The National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),Olisa Metuh has alleged that leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC)have abandoned General Muhammadu Buhari to his campaigns for the February 14, presidential election.
Metuh, in a statement at the weekend, claimed that ‘’most leaders of the APC do not believe in the personality of Buhari, resulting in flip-flops and double standards that have been the fate of his presidential campaign.’’
“While key APC leaders like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential aspirant, Sam Nda-Isaiah have since abandoned Buhari and his rickety campaign to an inclement fate, Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has not been able to hide his preference for a younger, more educated and more articulate candidate who is able to connect with the current generation of citizens as embodied in President Goodluck Jonathan,’’ Metuh noted.
The PDP described the current relationship between former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu and theAPC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari as ‘‘a marriage of strange bedfellows driven by a very selfish cabal led by Tinubu to whom Buhari is a mere pawn in their quest to access the economic and political interests of the nation.’’
But the APC in its reaction dismissed these allegations as “utterly false and ridiculous.’’
Mallam Garba Shehu, Director of Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign in a statementexplained that there was no iota of truth whatsoever that Atiku or other party stalwarts have distanced themselves from the campaign.
According to the statement, the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar ‘’is currently out of the country for medical examination, and he would be actively involved in the campaign once he is back to the country from next week.’’
Garba Shehu further emphasized that Atiku’s commitment to the campaign in his native state, Adamawa and the nation “is total” and that “no amount of PDP’s desperate tactics of deliberate falsehoods would break the unity of APC leaders.”
The statement said the PDP allegation was a figment of their imagination in order to weaken the cohesion in the opposition party, adding that the “ruling party is increasingly nervous as the February 14 elections approach.” He advised Nigerians to ignore the “rubbish being peddled by the PDP.”
