AWIG ConvenerChairperson Bridget I Gold
The Association of Women in Governance (AWIG) will on Friday, January 24, 2020 hold a day’s awareness programme with focus on the girl child, with a view to drawing state, national and global attention to the importance of educating the girl child. This is in line with the United Nations (UN) declaration of January 24 as the International Day of Education.
With the theme, “Missing Opportunities: The High Cost of Not Educating Girls”, the event will hold at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Schools, Ikeja, Lagos.
According to the Convener/Chairperson AWIG Mrs. Bridget I. Gold, the association believes that “education is a human right and educating girls is a strategic development policy.”
“The main purpose of this programme is to draw attention to the girl child and the importance and necessity of educating the girl child toward achieving the UN’s aims of sustainable development.
“Failure to educate girls is especially costly because of the relationship between education, child marriage, early child bearing and the risks they entail for young mothers and their children,” Mrs. Gold said.
Some of the major backers of the event include Mrs. Shin-Aba Bamidele Victoria, Airport Manager, Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), as Co-Host; Mrs. Otoide Stella Osahuemhome, Principal, Murtala Muhammed Airport Schools, Ikeja, as Mother of the Day; Mrs. Adedeji Maruf Abidemi and Mrs. Anyaeche Patience Ugonwa – to mention but a few.
AWIG is composed of people looking to make a difference in the life of women and children in Nigeria, and the world at large. The body is dedicated to gathering women from all walks of life in Nigeria and the world at large to give them a chance to foster enduring values in leadership by providing them with a non-partisan platform for dealing with critical issues affecting women, children and their development through intense research, networking, extensive education and training programmes. The body stands as a voice of the voiceless and a shining beacon of hope to girls, wives, sisters and mothers.
