Anambra Commissioner for Transport, Dr Christian Madubuko
In its bid to tackle issues of the traffic congestion in its major metropolis, the Anambra State Government has entered into partnership with a private investor to construct motor parks in the state.
The parks include Prof Kenneth Dike Park, located near Eke Awka Market, Awka, and the Dicentflo Park, Igbariam Junction, Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking Wednesday in Awka, the state capital, the state Commissioner for Transport, Dr Christian Madubuko, said that government was determined to move commuters away from the highways to designated parks at the Igbariam Junction, Awkuzu in order to ease traffic and ensure orderliness on the expressway.
He said that passengers and commercial vehicle operators are expected to move into the parks immediately for loading and off-loading purposes.
“The essence is to ensure that we decongest traffic around the Eke Awka axis. All commercial vehicles including tricycle operators will henceforth use the parks for their businesses,” Madubuko said.
Inaugurating the parks, the Commissioner said the move was to resolve the perennial traffic congestion being experienced by motorists at the Eke Awka end of Zik’s Avenue.
While inspecting facilities in the parks which include public conveniences, canteens, water supply and waiting bay, Dr Madubuko explained that they were built in line with international best practices.
He added that other facilities needed for its optimal operation would soon be constructed and urged passengers to board vehicles in the parks.
The representative of the Prof Kenneth Dike Motor Park Manager, Mr. Iyke Onyekwuluje, said the venture was also aimed at immortalising late Prof Kenneth Dike and in so doing, beautify the capital city.
Mr. Emmanuel Ekwunife, Manager, Dicentflo Motor Park, said the newly built facility would curb cases of accidents recorded at the Igbariam junction end of the Enugu – Onitsha Expressway.
