Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State
The Civil Liberties
Organisation (CLO) has urged the Anambra State Government to seek divine
intervention over frequent and monumental fire disasters in the state.
The Chairman of CLO,
Anambra State, Mr Vincent Ezekwueme, made the call while speaking with newsmen
in Enugu on Wednesday.
Ezekwueme spoke on the
background of the Onitsha Bridge-Head Market fire on Monday, December 23, and
the famous Ochanja Market fire.
The fire destroyed
numbers of high-rise buildings and hundreds of shops.
“CLO laments incessant
fire disaster in Anambra State.
“We reiterate our call
on government and church leaders to organise three days prayer and fasting
session to seek the face and mercy of God.
“Also seeking divine
intervention toward horrendous fire and roads accidents that happens in the
state.
“Pertinently, unusual
and uncommon problems demand divine solution.
“CLO calls for divine
mercy and help upon the victims and to miraculously replenish their lost
wealth,” Ezekwueme said.
He called on the
Federal and Anambra governments, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),
State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and public-spirited individuals to
come to the aid of the victims.
Such an aid would
ameliorate their pathetic predicaments and to ensure that they rejoice with
others this Yuletide.
“CLO equally pleads
with the State Fire Service to be proactive and focus more on fire prevention
measures by organising seminars and road-shows on fire prevention mechanism.
”Since prevention is
better than cure, this will restore people’s confidence in their ability to
live up to their mandate as fire fighters.
“Citizens must also be
safety and security conscious as well,” he said.
