Anambra State
Commissioner of Police, John Abang, on Tuesday, absolved security agencies of
being the spearheadd of the endemic traffic jam at the bridge head in Onitsha.
The area over the
years is known to be a no-go area because of traffic congestion during festive
seasons.
Addressing journalists
after an on-the-spot inspection of the area on Tuesday, the CP, who was
accompanied by heads of other security agencies in the state stressed that the
gridlock was caused by the impatience of some motorists who are in a hurry to
get to their destination.
He explained that the
essence of the visit was to ensure free-flow of traffic for Nigerians who are
returning home for the Christmas celebration.
Abang said: “As a
follow up to our last visit to the bridge head recently, you can see all the
Service Commanders of the Anambra State Command are here present.
“You can also see
there is no security agent or agencies that are causing traffic on the road.
It’s rather the impatience of some of our travellers.
“We reassure the
public that the law enforcement agencies will continue to collaborate and
ensure safety and security of all citizens before during and after the
Christmas and new year celebrations.”
While expressing
satisfaction over the free-flow of traffic in the area, he attributed it to the
synergy among all the security personnel in the state.
Abang urged the
citizenry to go about their lawful businesses in view of the existing peace and
security in the state even as he gave assurance that the patrol will continue
non-stop till the end of the festive period.
The CP’s visit to the
commercial city included aerial surveillance, patrols and traffic control.
News Expressreports that a group known as Human
Right, Liberty Access and PeaceDefenders Foundation (HURIDE), had
earlier blamed security agencies for the traffic jam, saying that some drive
against traffic within the bridge area.
The group also linked
the traffic build up to alleged collection of tolls by some police officers
from motorists and urged the CP to call his men to order.
