2015: APC Governors prefer Amaechi as Buhari’s running mate

All Progressives Congress (APC) State Governors are rooting for Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as running mate to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), who emerged the party’s presidential candidate during the National Convention held on Wednesday and Thursday in Lagos.

A report this morning in Daily Independent quoted sources within the APC leadership as confiding that the governors, including former Kwara State Governor and Chairman, Senate Committee on the Environment, Senator Bukola Saraki, are opposed to moves by APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu, to impose his one-time Attorney-general and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yemi Osibajo, on Buhari as running mate.

“This is causing ripples between the governors and Tinubu,” the report said, adding that the governors and Senator Saraki “alleged that Osibajo has no electoral value and cannot win election.” “He is not a politician and does not have a national clout,” they were quoted to have said.

Tinubu, on the other hand, is resolute that Buhari’s running mate must come from the South-West, according to the report.

Daily Independent authoritatively revealed that APC bigwigs had earlier conceded the position of Senate President to Tinubu’s wife, Senator Oluremi Tunubu, in event the party secures majority in the Senate.

The zoning arrangement leaves out the South-East and the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), whose five State Governors (among them Amaechi) and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar have been toling to build APC since November last year.
