Urbane phamarcist and politician, Mr Jimi Agbaje, sprang a surprise yesterday, defeating a long time strongman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, immediate past Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, and others to emerge as the party’s governorship candidate.
The election held in the Oregun area of Lagos was not, however, without drama. While counting was going on, there was an uproar, as some persons tried to grab the ballot box, according to a Channels TV report.
There were reports of gun shots as thugs loyal to different aspirants clashed during the election held at Yard 158 Event Centre along Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun. There were also reports of discrepancies between the number of delegates and the number of ballots counted. While 806 delegates were recorded, 863 ballots were counted at the end of the election, a development that caused a disagreement.
In the end, Agbaje was declared winner with 432 votes, with Obanikoro traing with 346 votes and Tokunbo Kamson 46 votes. Babatunde Gbadamosi and Adedeji Doherty each polled 21 votes.
