Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State have rescued a victim of human trafficking and arrested the alleged sponsor, Grace Etiefon, 46.
The suspect, an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, was nabbed by NSCDC when she was making move to send her victim, 30-year-old Miss Njideka Akinpelu, to Lagos for onward movement to Libya on Monday, September 30.
Speaking while parading the suspect, the state Commandant of NSCDC, Mr David Bille, said the suspect was arrested at a Lagos-bound motor park at Unizik Junction, Awka, on said the date.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was been taken to Libya for prostitution.
Bille urged residents of the area to avoid getting into relationship with people of dubious character.
He said: “The NSCDC will not hesitate in the clamp down of syndicates of human trafficking and other crimes in the state.
“The suspect would be handed over to National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for more investigations and prosecution.”
While saying that Etiefon’s action contravened Human Rights Act, the Commandant enjoined the general public to avail the Corps of useful information even as he warned perpetrators of such acts to stay clear of the state.
The victim, an indigene of Nawfia in Njikoka Local Government of Anambra State, said she was a petty trader at Unizik Junction, before the suspect came with the offer to assist her travel to Libya for a better life.
