Armed robbers have invaded a bank (Wema) in Ise Ekiti, killing a police officer and carting away unspecified amount of money.
Channels Television reports that the Police Public Relations Officer, in Ekiti state, Mr. Caleb Ikechukwu who confirmed the incident said the gang broke the bank security door with dynamite to gain access.
In a report by Legit.NG, it was gathered that the robbery happened at about 2.30 p.m with heavy shooting as the 10-man gang drove into the commercial bank.
Witnesses as saying the robbers operated for at least 25 minutes after coming into the town with two vehicles through Ikere Road.
Spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in Ekiti State, Ikechukwu, disclosed that the robbers succeeded in carting away an unspecified amount of money after gaining access into the bank's vault.
The Police spokesperson said officers of the law enforcement agency are on the trail of the robbers, saying, “I can confirm to you that a bank was robbed at Ise Ekiti this afternoon,” he said.
“The robbers broke the security door with explosive material, precisely dynamite. Our men are on their trail and we shall ensure that none of them escapes.
“Members of the public should go about their normal duties and be rest assured that we are ready to protect their lives and property at all times,” he said.
He also called on residents of the state not to panic.
