A Karmo Grade I Area Court, Abuja on Thursday, ordered that a 25-year-old woman, Lauratu Mohammed, who pleaded guilty to abandoning a two-month-old baby, be remanded in a correctional centre, pending sentencing.
Mohammed of Kado Village Abuja pleaded guilty on a count charge of cruelty to a child and begged the court for mercy.
The Judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, who gave the order, adjourned the matter until Sept. 30 for sentencing.
The Prosecution Counsel, Mrs. Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that the matter was lodged at the Life Camp Police Station by one Suleiman Dauda, of Kado Village, Abuja on July 13.
Ukagha said that sometime in July the defendant being the wife of the complainant, for no reason abandoned her two-month-old son and disappeared.
She said without provocation, the defendant intentionally and violently dumped her two-month-old baby, exposing him to danger.
The prosecutor explained that during police interrogation, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of her action.
The prosecutor told the court that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 238 of the Penal Code. (NAN/The Guardian)
