Fire disaster: Alaafin of Oyo counts losses

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, is now counting his losses following the fire which gutted his palace this morning.

The fire raged for about an hour and a half before it was put off by fire fighters.

Speaking minutes ago on RayPower FM, Media Assistant of the monarch, Alhaji Azeez Fehintola, confirmed that “there were no casualties,” adding, however, that “properties worth hundreds of thousands of naira were destroyed by the fire.”

He said that the fire started around 6am and razed down about 21 rooms of the ancient palace.

Fehintola said most affected by the fire, which reportedly broke out from an electrical surge, are the flats of Princess Folasade (Iyaa Meta), Princess Rukayat, and Princess Abibat.

Besides, some rooms known as Ile Ori, Ile Ifa where artifacts are stored, plasma television, clothes, shoes, jewellery and bags were destroyed by the raging fire.
