Chaotic scenes from Pretoria, South Africa
South Africa’s Pretoria central business district was on the boil today, with Nigerian targeted once more in what has become a recurring circle of xenophobic attacks.
A distress message this evening of Wednesday, August 28, from News Express Special Correspondent Ademola Oluwaranti said: “They are targeting Nigerians and foreign owned shops. They are looting and burning shops.”
The Nigerian scholar who lectures in a South Africa university forwarded videos shots showing disturbing scenes of violence and arson, as brave South African policemen battled to bring the situation under control.
Oluwaranti further reported: “It’s happening just about 800m to where I stay. I had to cancel my classes for the afternoon and rush to pick the children in school. The school sent SMS to parents to come pick the children immediately at closing. We are indoors now.”
On the cause of the attacks, News Express Special Correspondent said: “We heard yesterday that a supposed Nigerian drug dealer was caught by a taxi driver and prevented from selling the drugs. He pulled out a gun and shot dead the taxi driver.”
