The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has seized a total sum of N20.6m and arrested five persons over illegal sale of new Naira notes in Kano.
In a sting operation carried out with the Department of State Service, (DSS) and the staff of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) across the strategic locations in Kano City.
A statement issued by ASC Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi, Public Relations Officer NSCDC Kano command that was made available to newsmen in Kano revealed that the raid on the vendors took place on Thursday and Friday 8th and 9th of August 2019.
The statement disclosed that “a sting operation with DSS and CBN officials led to the confiscation of twenty million, six hundred and fifty-nine thousand nine hundred and sixty Naira (N20.6M), and arrest of five suspects “.
ASC Abdullahi noted that the activities of the suspects ran foul to the provision of section 20 and 21 of the CBN’s Act.
According to NCDC spokesman ‘squeezing, soiling and writing on the naira notes have been treated by this section as an abuse of the naira with a punitive price of six-month imprisonment.”
The command assured that the exercise would be sustained to check the activities of illegal marketers of new naira notes.
The statement further noted that the five suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded. (Independent)
