Former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), minutes ago made good his promise to join the 2015 presidential race when he formally declared his intention at a well attended rally at Eagle Square in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
Buhari, who unsuccessfully contested for the plum job in 1999, 2007 (both under the platform of the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and 2011 (under the banner of the equally defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), is this time running on the platform of the mega opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), of which he is joint National Leader with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Ahead of the declaration, Buhari had engaged in widespread consultations across the country, in addition to writing to some prominent Nigerians to inform them of his aspiration and ask for their support.
He has promised to defeat the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if he emerges the APC presidential candidate and to bring about real change by fighting corruption, reviving the country’s economy and improving on the precarious security situation, among others.
At least two other APC henchmen – Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar – are expected to follow in Buhari’s footsteps and formally declare their presidential ambition in the days ahead.
