The Anambra Police Command has arrested a runaway driver who rammed into school children on Monday in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, killing three pupils on the spot has been nabbed by the State Police Command.
This was disclosed to journalists by the Oba Divisional Police Officer, DPO Ifeanyi Abanaofor.
He said that about 10 people who were injured in the accident have been taken to various hospitals for medical attention.
His words: “The driver of the ill-fated vehicle, Mr. Chibuzor Elebo, has been arrested.”
A source attributed the crash to the recklessness of the driver, who was said to be answering telephone call when the incident occurred.”
The source said: “He lost control and veered off his lane into the other lane before ramming into the kids, killing three instantly, while the 4th one died at the hospital.”
Another source, who claimed to be an eyewitness, told our correspondent that the children were just dismissed from school for the day when the incident happened.
He said: “The schoolchildren came out in their large numbers having been dismissed at about 2pm on the fateful day.
“As they were milling down the Oba/Nnewi Old Road, a vehicle, Infinity SUV with registration No. MYB 22 AAA, that was speeding while coming from Onitsha direction had brake failure and rammed into the pupils, killing four on the spot while about 10 of them sustained injuries”.
“The driver it was gathered killed four of the children andinjured 10 others. The corpses of the deceased were deposited at Gateway Hospital morgue, Oba.
The President-General of Aboji Akanano Union Oba, Dozie Nweke, described theaccident as “unfortunate anda great loss to Oba people and the families of the pupils.
He urged parents of both the injured and dead pupils to take heart saying "it has happened."
It was gathered that out of the four pupils that died, two were siblings while the fourth one died in the hospital.
