Tragedy struck at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State, when a 300 level student, Omotola Akorede of Department of Microbiology slumped and subsequently died while playing football.
The incident occurred at the university training ground pitch and all efforts to resuscitate him were abortive.
He was said to have been rushed to university medical centre for first aid treatment but gave up the ghost at the centre.
The incident threw the entire university in a sorrowful mood even as the university confirmed it.
It was gathered that Akorede was playing left back during a novelty match and suddenly fell down while standing with fellow defenders, started having breathing difficulty and rushed to the health centre, where he later died.
The University Registrar, Margaret Omasule, in a statement confirmed the sad development saying all medical measures taken to save the student’s life proved abortive.
Accordimg to her, “I regret to inform the university community that one of our students, a part three student in the Department of Microbiology, Omotola Akorede Kayode, died suddenly this morning, Friday, 17th of May, 2019.
“The report had it that the student was playing football with his colleagues when he suddenly slumped. He was subsequently rushed to the health centre where he was confirmed dead on arrival. All resuscitation measures proved abortive.” (INDEPENDENT)
