Labour and Employment Minister Ngige
The Idemili Patriotic Forum in Anambra State has accused those it described as the militant arm of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) of plotting to assassinate the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige.
Addressing journalists after rising from its meeting in Awka, the state capital, on Thursday, the spokesman of the body, Mr. Sylvester Okoye, said that the attack on their brother was executed because he is an Igbo man.
He said: “Our attention has been drawn to the plot by the national leadership of the NLC to assassinate our brother in the name of unionism.
“The reason given by the labour leader for the attack on our kinsman is unbelievable, and a cover-up to assassinate the Minister.
“We the people of Idemili Patriotic Forum have been watching the avalanche of attacks on our brother since he became a Minister of the Federal Republic and what he has passed through in the hands of the Nigerian NLC led by Ayuba Wabba.
“We are also aware of the campaign of calumny and name-calling against our brother in the discharge of his duties and this is a prelude towards eliminating our brother.
“Be it known today that the life of our brother, Sen Chris Ngige, is in the hands of the National Chairman of the NLC, Mr. Wabba.”
Okoye insisted that “for Wabba to have led a gang of assassins to storm the residence of Ngige is a clear indication that he wants the Minister dead.”
The group called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take immediate action on the assassination attempt on the Minister by “the killer squad of the labour leader.”
He further noted that the attack on Ngige is because he is an Igbo man adding that the body will no longer tolerate any further attempt on the life of the Minister.
NLC had on Thursday made good its threat to picket Ngige’s Abuja residence over the delay in the inauguration of veteran labour leader Chief Frank Kokori as Chairman of the Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) but the exercise turned bloody following the attack on the unionists by thugs.
