Worried by the activities of suspected one-chance operators, whose victims have reportedly suffered robbery, injuries and trauma, the Rivers State Ministry of Transport has issued a final reminder to commercial transport operators to paint their vehicles in the approved state colours on or before October 31, 2026.

The directive covers all commercial transport vehicles, including taxis, buses and tricycles (keke), with the ministry warning that strict enforcement would commence on November 1, 2026.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Dr Vera Ndidi Sam-Dike, yesterday, the ministry said the measure was aimed at strengthening public security and making legitimate commercial transport vehicles easily identifiable by commuters.

According to the statement, all unpainted or improperly painted commercial vehicles must comply with the approved colour scheme before the October 31 deadline.

It warned that any commercial vehicle found operating without the approved state colours after the deadline would be impounded, while the operator would be barred from further operations until compliance and payment of applicable fines.

The ministry advised operators seeking clarification, particularly on designated painting workshops offering subsidised rates, to contact the Head of Land Transportation Department.

The government also appreciated transport union leaders and vehicle owners who had already complied with the directive, urging others to do so before the enforcement deadline. (The Guardian)
