A large crowd of mourners, among them Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Peter Obi, and immediate past Nigeria Ambassador to South Africa, Amb Mrs Uche Ajulu-Okeke, on Friday thronged Obiuno community, Umudim Nnewi North, Anambra State to pay their last respects to Chief (Barr.) Debe Odumegwu Ojukwu, the first son of late Biafra warlord, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

Debe was led to rest in his compound after a funeral service at St. John’s Catholic Church Umudim.

Debe, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, was given gun salutes and also honoured with parades by the Nigerian Police Force before his interment.

While Peter Obi, the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, sent representatives, Ambassador Ajulu-Okeke led the delegation of Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) to the funeral.

Ndieze (traditional rulers) of Nnewi, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos branch, Nnewi Youth League, Umudim Development Union, Biafra Nations Youth League (BNYL), lawyers and Yoruba business men, among others, were also present to honour the departed lawyer, businessman and politician.

Speaking with News Express, National Leader of BNYL, Princewill Chimezie Richard, eulogised Debe, describing him as “a great man who continued his father’s cause and achieved a lot within his short time on earth.”

News Express reports that Debe Ojukwu died in Lagos on November 3, 2018, at the age of 62.
