Nigerian Police officers
The police have arrested six male suspects involved an assault meted out on a lady in a video which went viral recently.
Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Mba, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Following the incident which he described as “shocking, barbaric and indecent,” Mr Mba said the acting Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, ordered a comprehensive investigation into the report.
This prompted the Edo State Police Command, led by its Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, to swing into an action which resulted to an “investigative breakthrough”.
“Two other male suspects are still at large. Efforts are being intensified to arrest them and bring all involved to justice,” the Force spokesman said.
He added, “The Nigeria Police Force condemns jungle justice in its entirety and warns of dire consequences for persons who resort to criminal acts of self-help.”
Meanwhile, the police have established contact with the 24-year-old victim.
According to Mba, the Force is monitoring her health status and recovery rate.
He said the Commissioner of Police in Edo would provide more details as the investigation progresses.
The six male suspects arrested are Otoghile Joel, Lucky Igbinovia, Edobor Osemwengie, Kingsley Iyamu, Gregg Eweka, and Friday Omorogbe.
In the video which went viralon social media, the lady was alleged to have stolen a phone purportedly owned by Joel.
Shewas totally stripped and tortured, while the suspects reportedly inserted pepper into her body.
The video sparked criticism from Nigerians who took to the social media to call on the security agencies to apprehend and bring the perpetrators of the act to justice.
