No fewer than 262 engineering graduates of the University of Ibadan (UI) have been inducted into the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) during a ceremony for the 2012/2013 graduating set held at the Faculty of Technology Large Lecture Theatre of the university.
Welcoming the inductees and all participants, the Dean, Faculty of Technology, Prof. Emmanuel Ajav, said: “I, today, appreciate the efforts of inductees since their fresh days, because they have been labouring for long under an environment which is not really conducive. Sometimes, they receive lecture in a crowded atmosphere. Be that as it may, I want you to be encouraged and forward-looking, because tomorrow shall be better.”
He challenged inductees to work hard to succeed as engineers and to contribute to the development of the faculty and the university at large.
Speaking, the NSE Ibadan Branch Chairman, Engineer R.A. Salawu, described engineering as a profession from which the society expects much. His words: “The society believes in us and our primary focus must be geared towards ensuring the betterment of their lives. The knowledge of mathematics and physics, as essential as they are, can never be compared to any other subject. So, we must use these to reform mankind, to effect positive changes in our environments.”
The Guest Speaker, Engr. Olufemi Kayode, attributed the challenges of engineers to problem of capacity, saying they are not engaged and encouraged, thus hampering their development.
Engr. Kayode enjoined the inductees to see opportunities in the professional world of engineering in the face of challenges, adding that they should not join the overcrowded community of complainants. He charged them to identify problems, analyse them and proffer solutions, with a view to creating wealth for themselves and others while, at the same time, advancing societal development.
