Plateau State Commissioner of Information and Communication, YakubuDati
Plateau state Government has faulted a recent report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa service that one AbdullahiYadau in Kanam local government area of the state had divorced his wife, Hafsat Suleiman for insisting on voting for President MuhammaduBuhari in the upcoming presidential election.
The report which has been in circulation since Wednesday night had quoted Yadau of speaking to the BBC Hausa Service where he narrated how an argument between his support for the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) AtikuAbubakar and his wife’s love for President Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) led to a domestic squabble in which he beat her.
Yadau was said to have told the BBC that he had later pronounced the divorce twice on his wife before her parents. His report was corroborated by a man who alleged to be his wife’s brother, Ibrahim Suleiman who also stressed that his sister will not return to her husband.
However, The Plateau State Commissioner of Information and Communication, YakubuDati on Friday issued a statement stating that the story was not only fake but a figment of the author’s imagination.
Dati said, “the government conducted a thorough investigation and discovered that no such incident took place in Kanam or any part of Plateau State. The publication is meant to create sensation and tension in the polity aimed at creating confusion amongst the populace.”
“President Buhari’s supporters are passionate Nigerians whose number is rising by the day and would stand by him no matter the circumstances because they believe and trust in his quest to make the country better,” he stated and stressed that “the fake news is the handiwork of the opposition element who are already scared of the massive turn out of the supporters at the presidential rally at the Rwang Pam stadium.”
The local government Chairman of Kanam, Hon. WokdungAdamu Abbas also told Daily Trust on phone that the police had invited the couple to Dengi; the headquarters of Kanam from their remote village in AnguwanGero in Munbutbo ward and both had denied the incident.
