Former National Vice Chairman of Persons with Disability, Comrade Rilwanu Muhammed Abudllahi, has described the planned impeachment of Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, as a declaration of war against persons with disability in Nigeria.
Governor Al-Makura was served a letter of impeachment through the media by the state House of Assembly two days ago but the planned impeachment has generated uproar in the state, with youth protesting on major streets of Lafia, the state capital.
Comrade Rilwanu, who spoke with newsmen in Kaduna, appealed to religious leaders, human rights activists and traditional leaders to intervene and stop Nasarawa lawmakers from carrying out their threat.
According to him, “It is a war against us people with disability by Nasarawa State lawmakers and the PDP. We all are aware of the state PDP chairman who sometime in 2013 made it clear in his statement that the governor was not competent because of his hearing disability.
“We also are aware that majority of the state lawmakers are PDP members, which is why we the people living with disability believe it is a war against us because there is no section of Nigerian Constitution that stops anybody person with disability from holding a political office.
“So we feel the lawmakers are only trying to violate our fundamental human right as Nigerians. We are appealing to human rights activities, religious leaders and traditional rulers to intervene for the sake of humanity so as to give us a sense of belonging in our dear country.”
On the competence of the governor, Comrade Rilwanu said they believe that Al-Makura is among the best governors in the country at present.
