2019: INEC to provide separate queues for people with disability

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed plans to provide separate queues for persons living with disabilities in the 2019 general elections.

According to the electoral body, this is to ensure participation of everyone including people with disability in the election process.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Jigawa State, Mahmud Isah, disclosed this to journalists on Saturday after a voter education programme, at the manpowerdevelopment institute in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.

“We have put up necessary measures to ensure that people with disability are fully involved in the election process. A special space will be provided for them because of their peculiarity.

“So a separate queue will be provided for people with disability so that they can vote easily,” he said.

INEC Boss, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had earlier stressed that the commission is fully prepared to conduct free, fair and credible elections in 2019.

He said this while briefing reporters on Wednesday after meeting with the Northern Traditional Rulers Council in Kaduna State.

According to him, the electoral body is not just ready for the general polls but is better prepared than it did for the 2015 elections.

“Let me assure the nation that we are really truly prepared for the elections. We started the countdown long time ago.

“With 58 days to the elections, with 50 per cent of the activities outlined in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities; we are actually better prepared for the 2019 general elections than at a comparable time in 2014 for the 2015 general elections,” he said.
