Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has debunked the insinuations in some quarters that the All Progressives Congress was reluctant to flag of its nationwide campaigns for the forthcoming general elections because it had nothing to show for its three and half years in power.
The main opposition, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), had expressed concern that less than sixty days to the election, the ruling party was yet to start its electioneering campaigns, alleging that the APC might have ran out of ideas.
But the minister, at a media chat with journalists, said the APC had indeed been campaigning but not using the conventional method of holding massive rallies as the PDP and other parties had done.
Mohammed said the ruling party was not just relying on its achievements, but was focused on the local issues that would win it votes in different parts of the country.
“I don’t think it is correct to say my party is not campaigning. Nobody is campaigning as hard as my party. I stay in this office and I watch our campaign in Gombe, Kano, Enugu or Imo. There is no where that our party is not campaigning.
“If you are talking about special campaign, maybe because the ban was just lifted and things are yet to pick up. But to say my party is not campaigning is wrong. We are campaigning very hard and believe me, what wins elections is not the jamboree. What wins election is actually understanding the local issues and this is being done very well. Even yesterday, I saw this massive campaign going on in Lagos. There is nowhere in Nigeria that we are not campaigning,
“Honestly, I do not entertain any fear in respect of the 2019 elections. On the contrary, the elections would come and would pass. We’re going to win with a larger margin than we did in 2015. That is very clear to me because the government has delivered on all its promises notwithstanding what the naysayers are saying. The records are there,” he said.
