Members of the Kogi State House of Assembly have boycotted plenary session over alleged non payment of their constituency allowances by the state government.

According to Daily Trust, the House had adjourned its plenary session two weeks ago and resumed on Tuesday but the plenary session could not hold following the boycott.

The lawmakers had gathered at the assembly complex as early as 10 am and went into an executive session which usually precedes the day’s plenary.

However, after the executive session the day’s could not hold due to lack of quorum as some of the lawmakers stormed out of the assembly in protest over the alleged non payment of their allowances.

It was learnt that the Speaker of the Assembly, Matthew Kolawole and few other lawmakers who were left at the assembly could not convene the plenary as they couldn’t form quorum.

A lawmaker who confirmed the development said they were aggrieved that the state government only paid 75% of their constituency allowance in 2017 while they were yet to receive any constituency allowance for 2018.

He said the aggrieved lawmakers have vowed not to sit until the constituency allowances were paid, pointing out that it is the only avenue they can use to impact their constituents positively.
