The Anambra State Police Command has arrested nine robbery suspects terrorising different parts of the state.
Among the suspects are 34-year-old Ubasinachi Akasi and Ukwueze Simon (36), who were arrested in Onitsha by police detectives attached to Ogidi division for snatching a Toyota Sienna vehicle with REG No. KPP 967 PJ at gunpoint.
Also arrested at Nise, Awka, were Chukwujekwu Akabueze (26), Abuchi Okpala (22), Anthony Offordile (22) and Nonso Madubuikelee (32) for conspiracy, robbery and alleged shooting of one Chukwu Nonye in his stomach at Amenyi Awka.
Three other suspects were arrested for possession of one single barrel gun and three live cartridges.
Two out of the three suspects namely Maduabuchi Ani (25) from Nike in Enugu State and Nanawn Justus (23) were arrested while one escaped into the bush.
Also nabbed by the police is 30-old suspected fraudster, Obinna Okafor, an indigene of Enugu-Ezike, Enugu State. Okafor was arrested by security operatives attached to Nnewi Area Command while on surveillance patrol around Access Bank Nnewi.
According to a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Mohammed, the suspect specialises in duping unsuspecting victims around automated teller machine centres by swapping their ATM cards with another stolen ATM in his possession.
He ran out of luck while withdrawing money using ATM Card stolen from a medical student in Nnewi.
Exhibits recovered from the suspects include eight different ATM Cards suspected to have been stolen from his victims and sum of N120,000 already withdrawn from his victim’s account at the point of his arrest.
Other exhibits recovered from the suspects were, one locally made revolver pistol with one live ammunition, one fabricated English Pistol, one Daihatsu Shuttle bus with REG number ANS 903 XD.
Mohammed said that investigation is in progress even as effort is ongoing to get the fleeing suspect arrested.
“The suspects have all confessed to the crime and would soon be charged to Court for prosecution after investigation is concluded,” the Anambra PPRO said.
The Command further assured the public of its commitments towards ensuring safety and security in the state.
