The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun the display of national register of voters at all the polling units for public scrutiny and possible claims and objections.
The purpose of the public display, according to officials, is to address issues of deceased registered voters, non-Nigerians, underage voters and multiple registration.
Reports had it the electoral umpire had started displaying the registers in many polling centres across Nigeria.
Briefing journalists yesterday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kano, Prof. Riskuwa Arabu Shehu, said it was a civic responsibility of the general public to cross-check the register in order to identify the aforementioned issues so as to guard the integrity of the register.
“Although the commission has dutifully cleaned up the register using the Automatic Fingerprints Identification Systems (AFIS), it is the right of the citizens, under the law, to examine the register and exercise their civic duty by drawing the attention of the commission to the inclusion of any ineligible persons,” he said.
INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu had on Tuesday said over 300,000 multiple registrants had been deleted from the register.
