Edo legislature crisis: Key APC lawmaker dismisses defection rumour

The legislator representing Ovia North East Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Bright Osayande, has dismissed rumours that he has quit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In an exclusive chat with News Express, Hon. Osayande said his conscience could never be bought, and that his loyalty to APC remains as strong as ever.

“I cannot mortgage my conscience for any personal aggrandizement. I pledge my loyalty to APC. I want to tell my people of Ovia North East that I will not go anywhere,” he said.

Hon. Osayande also reacted to accusations in some quarters that the suspension of the four PDP legislators was hastily and shabbily done hence the present logjam at the House.

“It (the suspension of four PDP lawmakers) was not too hastily done. We followed the due process and house rules. A motion was moved and PDP members in the house were there,” he insisted.

There have been insinuations that the warring lawmakers are being teleguided by their respective senior party leaders and that a resolution of the crisis could only come if these leaders call the key actors in the crisis to sheath their swords. Dismissing this idea, Hon. Osayande told News Express: “There is nobody that would just make a phone call and everything would be resolved. We need to follow the house rules. That’s what they (PDP) don’t want.”
