The Anambra State Police Command has arrested an unidentified suspect over the death of twenty-two-year-old Peter Osakwe, who was found hanging at the main entrance to his room located at No 27b Enweonwu street, Onitsha.
The victim's death was reported by a good Samaritan at the Inland town police station at 9:30am on October 30, 2018.
A statement by the police spokesman, SP Haruna Mohammed, said, "On the 30/10/2018 at about 9:30am, a good Samaritan in Onitsha reported at Inland town Division that a lifeless body of a tenant, named Peter Osakwe, aged 22 years was found hanged at the main entrance to his room.
Mohammed said that police detectives attached to Inland town division visited the scene, photographed the victim, and rushed him to General Hospital Onitsha, where he was confirmed dead by the medical Doctor on duty, adding that the corpse had been deposited at the hospital morgue for postmortem examination.
According to the PPRO, medical examination conducted on the deceased revealed marks of violence on his lower arms and pubic regions, hence murder is suspected.
Although, one suspect was arrested in connection with the crime, details of the suspect was not made known at the time of filing this report, even as the case is under investigation.
In another related development, the Command stated that it also recovered a vehicle snatched at gun point, on October 30, 2018, at Ogidi, idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The RAV 4, 2011 model car which belongs to Ekezie Somto was snatched after he was lured to St. Vincent Primary School, Ogidi by his Facebook friend identified simply as Sandra.
A statement made available to journalists by the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Haruna Mohammed said: "On the 30/10/2018 at about 6:30 PM,one Ekezie Somuto 'm' aged 30 years of Oganiru Estate complex Awka reported at Ogidi Police Station that his facebook friend, one Sandra surname unknown of no fixed address, aged about 22 years, fair in complexion lured him to come to St Vincent Primary School Ogidi.
"On arrival at the location, he was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by three unknown gunmen who made away with his Toyota RAV4 2011 model Jeep with Registration number Lagos KTU 311DV and other valuables,
"Following the incident, Police Patrol team attached to Ogidi Division in conjunction with vigilante group quickly mobilized to the scene and pursued the suspects who later abandoned the stolen vehicle and escaped into the bush."
Mohammed said that while the case is under investigation, efforts are ongoing to apprehend fleeing suspects.
In a related development, Police detectives attached to Awada Division also recovered a Lexus 300 Jeep with Registration number FGG 353 GF snatched at Gunpoint from one Brendam Dike of Orifite Street, Awada.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Similarly, a gas explosion occurred at Regime Gas Plant at Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, leaving five Staff members of the Company with various degrees of burns.
The injured were rushed to Nnewi Teaching Hospital where they àre currently responding to treatment.
Confirming the incident, the PPRO said investigation is already ongoing to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.
"On the 30/10/2018 at about 8:28 PM, there was a Gas explosion at Regime Gas Plant located along Obosi /Nkpor road Obosi in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State."
He said that following report of the explosion, Police Patrol team attached to Obosi Division led by the DPO rushed to the scene, cordoned off the area to protect lives and prevent looters from taking advantage of the situation.
Mohammed added that the fire was put off by well-meaning individuals who also prevented it from escalating.
