One of the erosion-devastated sites
Scores of women from Oko community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State have taken to the streets to protest the devastation erosion has caused in their community without any solution in sight.
Oko is the country home of late former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and the erosion which has remained a cankerworm in the community is gradually threatening his home.
Successive governments, including some members of the National Assembly from the state, in the past, embarked on palliative measures to control the menace but it keeps fighting back to the extent of chasing some families away from their homes.
The women accused sand excavators in the area of aiding the erosion and thereby making the community vulnerable.
The protesters displayed placards with various inscriptions such as “Government should stop this menace”, “Dr. Ekwueme’s family house is threatened by erosion”, “Sand excavators are endangering the future and hope of our children”, and “Our children will have no homes of their own if this is allowed to continue”. They called on the State Government to come to their aid to save the situation.
Addressing journalists, one of the leaders of the protesting women, Beatrice Ezeani said that they can no longer keep quiet while their land is being destroyed.
She said: “Some of our men collaborate with outsiders to cause this mayhem on our land and the future of our children. Erosion has caused the death of our loved ones.
She regretted that they have everything to erosion adding that the erosion is caused by human activities, especially land excavation.
She added, “That is why we are here today to say enough is enough. If this thing doesn’t stop, next time we shall protest naked. Our children must have a home. The society we abuse today shall tell on our children tomorrow.”
