Workers in Anambra State civil service are currently at daggers drawn following plans by the Nigerian Labour Congress in the State to go on strike.
The Chairman of NLC in Anambra State recently announced in some National dailies that its members would embark on an industrial action following an alleged financial scam rocking the State pension office.
The Chairman, Comrade Jerry Nnubia, had in a chat with newsmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital, announced that it would down tools if the state government fails to address the alleged scam in the pensions office.
But in a letter to the State Governor, Chief Wille Obiano signed by the State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Ifeanyi Okechukwu and the Secretary Bar. Alex Ebi, the body contends that:
“We wish to state that there was no time the TUC, NLC and JNC had any meeting to reach that conclusion as portrayed by the Chairman of NLC in the said publication.
“We know that we have been having meetings with the state government to iron out some grey areas in the contributory pension scheme which we are waiting on the state government to make statements to allay the fears of workers in some aspects of the Pencom.
“We know that the organised labour has had meetings with the SSG, HOS and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on National/State Assemblies and Trade Unions where we dwelt on various issues affecting our workers which they promised that His Excellency will make a pronouncement on those issues including pencom.
“We also know that His Excellency has made a promise to our workers to increase workers salaries once the national tripartite committee on minimum wage finalizes their assignment. Hence the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Anambra State Council does not in any way want to stampede the state government knowing fully well that His Excellency is a man of honour and will keep to his words.
