The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) senators agreed on Tuesday to put national issues before politics and stop the infighting in the National Assembly.

This agreement was reached when the Senate dissolved into a closed-door session shortly after the lawmakers resumed plenary.

The lawmakers on Tuesday resumed from their annual recess which began on July 25. Although, the break was earlier scheduled to end on September 25, it was extended to October 9 to enable them to participate in the just-concluded primaries of their political parties.

It was gathered that the closed-door meeting, which lasted for 20 minutes, was used to address salient issues, especially recent political disturbances in the Senate among the lawmakers.

A lawmaker, who spoke with our correspondent on the outcome of the closed-door meeting, disclosed that issues of threats and counter-threats were dropped.

It would be recalled that some APC senators, backed by the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, have threatened to impeach Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, on the excuse that the opposition PDP should not head the National Assembly where APC has majority lawmakers.

The lawmaker said the Senate immediately went into a closed-door session where all members frankly discussed the future of the eighth Senate in its last stage.

“The members agreed to give peace a chance and avoid allowing the red chamber of the federal legislature to degenerate into an arena of conflict over partisan and personal issues,” he said.

It was equally learnt that the APC caucus also extracted a promise from the Senate President that national interest would continue to take precedence over any other consideration in the activities of the Senate.

The senators were said to have agreed not to allow external forces and influences to cause disaffection, disturbance, or crisis within the legislature.
