Alison-Madueke loses out as OPEC extends Secretary General’s tenure

Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, today lost her bid to become the Secretary General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) as the cartel preferred to extend the tenure of incumbent Secretary General Abdalla S. El-Badri by six months. The extension takes effect from January 1, 2015.

The 165th OPEC Meeting was convened in Vienna, Austria, under the Chairmanship of its President, Omar Ali ElShakmak, Acting Minister of Oil & Gas of Libya and Head of its Delegation.

President Goodluck Jonathan had pushed the candidacy of the controversial Alison-Madueke in a move considered by many as an exit strategy for the minister, who has been smarting from allegations of corruption and poor performance.
