INEC Chairman Yakubu Mahmood
A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned indefinitely the case against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, for alleged contempt of court.
Justice Stephen Pam gave the ruling at the resumed hearing of the proceedings on Thursday in the nation’s capital.
He stressed that adjourning the case indefinitely became expedient having received communication to the effect that the Court of Appeal has stopped the arrest of the INEC Chairman, pending the hearing and determination of his appeal.
The judge informed the parties in the suit that a new date for the commencement of the case would be communicated to them.
On Wednesday last week, Justice Pam ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to arrest and bring Professor Yakubu to court.
He gave the directive following the alleged failure of the INEC boss to appear in court to defend himself in the contempt charge brought against him by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State.
But Justice Abdul Aboki of the Court of Appeal delivered a judgment, stopping the enforcement of the warrant of arrest issued against Yakubu.
He gave the ruling on Monday following an appeal filed by Professor Yakubu challenging the arrest warrant issued against him by the Federal High Court.
