The Federal Government has concluded arrangements to secure the freedom of and repatriate 116 of the Nigerians stranded and held in detention centres in Libya, just as 24 of the captives have rejected efforts to set them free, insisting that they must get to Europe through the North African country.

According to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a series of tweets on her Twitter handle, referenced a short video which surfaced online recently, showing some Nigerians being held in what she also described as “Osama detention centre Zawiya, Libya”.

Dabiri-Erewa also added that the Federal Government has processed the release and subsequent repatriation of 116 of the Nigerians with the help of the Nigerian mission in Libya and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

She also disclosed that about 24 Nigerians being held in captivity have refused efforts to set them free, insisting that they must get to Europe through the North African country.

In the said tweet, Dabiri explained: “Recall above video which trended online a while back. The Nigerian migrants have been traced to Osama detention centre Zawiya, Libya.

She added: “116 of them have been processed online by the Nigeria Mission in Tripoli and the IOM for repatriation back to Nigeria 24 have refused to come back”

She assured Nigerians that administration of President Buhari will continue to do all it can to secure the release of all Nigerians stranded and still being held captive in the country.

“Insisting they must get to Europe PMB will continue to ensure all stranded migrants willing to return are brought back,” her tweet read.
