Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have laid siege on a divisional police headquarters in Kaduna State, killing two police officers and six other civilians who were at the station.

The attackers, who stormed the Fadan Karshi community in Sanga local government of the state, first attacked the police station where they killed two of the officers who were on duty.

Our correspondent gathered that the attacked took place at about 9pm yesterday.

A villager who sought anonymity said that two of the attackers were also killed by the villagers.

“They were five in number, and after the attack on the police station, we gathered ourselves, followed them and in the process we killed two of them,” a villager told our correspondent.

“They killed two police officers, four civilians including three women who had gone to lay complaints to the police. We also killed two of them after exchanging fire with them. But two of our people sustained bullet wounds and they are now receiving medical treatment,” he added.

Confirming the incident, the Sanga local government chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Adamu Danzaria, said that the attackers were Fulani people, and that eight people including two of the invaders were killed in the process.

He said the local government was calm, adding that security operatives have been mobilised to every nook and cranny of the entire local government.

He equally expressed delight at the attitude of the people who come out en masse to repel the invaders.

Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero has condemned the attack as a “provocative attempt by hoodlums to throw the state into confusion.”

Yero in a statement by his director-general, media and publicity, Ahmed Maiyaki, condoled families of victims of the unwarranted attack on policemen and innocent citizens in the area.
