The Senate has mandated its Committee on Police Affairs to look into the circumstances that led to the attack on policemen on Monday at Galadimawa Junction, Abuja which led to the death of seven officers.
The Committee was also called upon to investigate a similar shooting incident 24 hours earlier in which two policemen were killed at a checkpoint near Manderegi village in Abaji.
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki who raised the issue on the floor of the Senate, during the plenary on Thursday, said that it is important for the National Assembly to show concern and care for the Police irrespective of their shortcomings.
He said: “I think as a National Assembly, as much as we pay attention to ordinary citizens that lose their lives either by the action or inaction of the police, we should be seen to also protect and be there for those who protect our lives.
“I will like us to find out what happened with regards to these seven police officers that were killed, the circumstances, and how we can commiserate with the families and do whatever needs to be done so that police officers will know we care and appreciate what they are doing.”
Meanwhile, the Chairman Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Abu Ibrahim, representing Katsina Central, has revealed that the Committee has invited the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris over the killing of the policemen and the recent protest by officers against the Nigerian Police Force in Maiduguri.
The Committee is expected to conclude its work and report back to the Senate next week Wednesday.
